When designing fixtures, a relevant aspect for positioning accuracy is the configuration of locators, which establish a relationship between part datum references and machine axes. This work aims to investigate on how locators configuration affects precision of manufacturing operations. It considers how deviations on locators position used in manufacturing set-up propagate on toleranced features. The paper focuses on calculating position errors on machined features due to fixture configuration. An analytical approach has been used: the position of each locator has been simulated by a density probability distribution and, consequently, the probability density function of the position of the machined feature has been calculated. 2D parts have been considered to validate this approach. In this way it is possible to model both real cases, such as drilled plates, and 3D cases when assuming a perfect accuracy on the support plane.
